Region: Bairrada DOC
Varieties: Bical and Arinto
Oenologist: Nuno Bastos
Acidity Level: 5,9 g/l
When tasting white wines from Bairrada it is impossible not to think about the close proximity of the region to the Atlantic Ocean, being this a defining factor of the characteristics of the wines from this renowned region.
Freshness and salinity are two elements that, when correctly used by viticulture and oenology, can create uniqueness and, many times, excellence. Being acquainted with the references – they belonged to Vinhas Vale Dom Pedro, with 9 acres in Poutena – I was very curious to see the touch given by the bold Positivewine, a winemaker that had surprised me before with their sparkling wines.
The shock couldn’t be bigger, above all for being a wine that baffles us a bit, when tasting, for what it shows. With a golden yellow colour, hinting a medium skin maceration, the challenge begins on the nose for its freshness, the citrus, an odd dry fruit and noticeable salinity clearly exposing the fact the vineyard is two steps away from the Atlantic Ocean.
Deep in the mouth, dry, with a lively acidity but not exceedingly so, crispy, the alcohol level and the freshness well balanced, making it an appealing wine with no traces of dullness. In fact, this is a wine that defies our senses from start to finish, asking for our acumen to always find something new. The six months it stays in oak provides a thin, almost imperceptible make-up giving it a subtle unctuosity.
With the challenges put forth by this wine, we can do nothing but return to it more, and by that making it enticing. Nice work!
